Riding a Honda Rincon four wheel motorbike through a narrow road up and down the mountain, Juan Diego showed me the different areas where the coffee trees are planted, we saw skillful workers picking up only the beans that have reached its best stage and gather them in sacks. I have to tell that living in this lands is like to live in heaven, here you don't think in wars nor global economy shrinks, your mind is busy in simpler things, like hearing the wind blowing the leaves or a distant songbird sing...

After about 40 minutes in a road with scenic views of green cultivated hills at both sides, Juan Diego De la Cerda manager of the farms, parked the truck and show me from a vantage point where were the farm limits. "These lands have been property of my family since 1905" Juan Diego told me. Then we did our first stop at the small cozy casa patronal to plan our day, wash our hands and drink a cup of coffee...

A Trip to Heaven, Part 1

Yesterday I visited two of the best coffee farms of Guatemala. El Socorro and San Guayabá, a chunk of land in which both estates are placed near San José Pinula and Palencia, 50 km. east from Guatemala City. The morning was beautiful, full of fresh air and blue skies...

Morning Ride

Twice a week i take my bike to a ride in the fields that surround my home, although is a bit populated place, you still find green grass and narrow trials where to show of your skills, at the top of the hill you can see a beautiful sight of Guatemala City.
The weather? just fine all year round.

Agua Volcano

This south view of the Agua Volcano (3,765 m.a.s.l.) from La Reunión golf course let see its smooth slope towards the Pacific coast, at right in the background, you can see the Pacaya Volcano (2,500 m.a.s.l.) pouring ashes to the sky. La Antigua Guatemala (in the next photo), the old capital of Guatemala and cradle of one of the best known coffees, is about 20km north from the golf club.

Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera House

Designed by Mexican architect and painter Juan O'Gorman in 1931, this avant-garde home in México City was actually two separate houses joined by a walkway (at the top of each house). Frida and Diego lived here between 1934 and 1940, and Rivera returned here to live after Frida's death in 1954. Now one of the architectural monuments of the area, the building also contains some of Rivera's art as well as the couple's personal belongings.

Coffee Farms Visit

Next Wednesday i have programmed a visit to a couple of coffee farms; Finca El Socorro and Finca San Guayabá, they already are in the beginning of the crop season, so soon Café P11 will give a blend from this premium quality beans. Look next week for photos and info about my visit.

Tikal, Lake Petén Itzá, Yaxhá

These are one of my favorite spots in Guatemala. Rain forest, lakes, islands, maya people, ancient rites, bright colors, full aroma... like my coffee.

The French Press

I love this thing because you can manage:
-Amount of coffee (i recommend two scoops x 8oz of water)
-Grind (coarser is better)
-Water amount and temperature (i recommend 8oz cups and 92C-94C)
-Brewing time(i recommend 4 min)
-No waste because you prepare only the cups you will drink

I prefer several 1 cup french pots for my guests instead of a larger one,
this way everyone can make his/her own decisions and the experience is more ritual oriented.
