A Trip to Cobán, Part 2 (Lanquín Caves)

Lanquín national park was one of the first protected areas declared in Guatemala, 2 hours east from Cobán is an enormous and beautiful complex with chambers and rooms, limestone formations of extraordinary beauty. Beneath the entrance of the caves a river flow from inside the earth with crystal cool waters that open its path through the jungle. The Lanquín caves are also a sacred site used by many of the Mayas from all over Guatemala, who believe the cave is the “heart of heaven”.

  1. This place is so amazingly beautiful and magical, and your photos are wonderful! You can easily see why the Mayans believe that it is heaven.

  2. What really helps here is the hard and far road to access it. As all we know the more popular a place is the most polluted it becomes.

  3. Then, I'm glad to hear that it's not easy to access, and that it was declared a protected area by the government. Hawai'i, which I love, also has several areas which held great significance in the religion of the native people, and are now overrun with tourists.

  4. Sometimes tourism works in opposite ways, one way toward progress but sadly often toward destruction.
